My Head Will Get Hot!

Last night we read Romans 12 at the dinner table. When I read verse 20-21 (If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something t drink. In doing this you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.) I asked them what this meant to them. Ben made a quick assessment and said, "If I'm mean to someone else and they're nice to me, my head will get hot!"

Much laughter followed, along with a great opportunity to talk about how we should treat others in our family, community and beyond. Being a dad is so much fun!

Barbie and Ken at Church?

David Murrow and Patrick Morley will be the featured speakers at our Leading Noble Men event on Tuesday, January 18th.

The purpose of this ½ day event is to equip and encourage pastors and key men's leaders in the local church to advance the priority of men's discipleship. I'm excited about the fact that over 40 churches have committed to attend.

Leading Noble Men

Family Christmas Traditions

Guys, many of you who have participated in The Quest for Authentic Manhood may remember Session 21: Twenty Five Ways to Be a Servant-Leader. I think this is one of the most compelling sessions in all of Men's Fraternity. Here are two of the items from the list of 25.

A servant-leader initiates meaningful family traditions
A servant-leader plans fun outings for the family on a regular basis.

Gentlemen, the Christmas season is a great time for you to step up to real servant-leadership that will bless your family for many years. Here are a couple of ideas...

Start a tradition of taking your children out to shop for mom. You may take them as individuals or in a group. But make this a memorable experience. Our kids enjoy going out to shop for Stacy! The boys get antsy and complain when we're looking at clothes but Hannah just loves it. Their reactions are even stronger when we go into a 'smelly' place like Bath and Body Works. The boys are gasping for air and Hannah basks in delight.

When Stacy and her sisters were small, my father-in-law started the tradition of taking each daughter out individually for dinner and shopping. Stacy has already celebrated her 28^th birthday several times, but each year she goes on a Christmas date with her dad.

Our family always goes Christmas caroling. Typically with another family, or a small group. We share a couple of songs on the porches of friends and family and hand off a small bag of cookies. The recipients are blessed and we are blessed with wonderful memories. (We've even been known to wander around our neighborhood in July singing Beach Boys tunes. We call this Summer Caroling but that's a different story!)

Perhaps you read the account of Christ's birth on Christmas Eve or bundle up and enjoy the Tacky Light Tour but the bottom line is this. Dad, be intentional and strategic in creating memories for your family. You don't have to be super creative or extravagant, just do it. By the way... make sure you use your traditions and activities to point your family toward Christ!

Processing Summer

Bless the Lord, O my soul;, and forget not all his benefits... Psalm 103:2

Summer is about to come to an end. The season has been quite busy for our family. Stacy and I feel like we've been in a whirlwind for three months. We're ready to settle back into some of the routines of the school year.

The kids have had a blast with all the things they've experienced but it's easy for them to just bump along waiting for the next exciting opportunity. They seldom take time to look back over their experiences and remember the friends, fun, excitement and delights of summer. They especially need help seeing how God has blessed us with opportunity, safety, friends and family.

So, one of the things we plan to do with this final weekend is take some time with the kids to talk about the summer. Here are a couple of our strategies...

I spent a lot of time with Tim on the mission trip to South Asia this summer. So Stacy plans to take Tim out for dinner and talk with him personally about his experiences. This will be a great mother/son activity. Both Stacy and Tim are looking forward to it.

I plan to take Hannah on a Daddy date and talk with her about all the things she enjoyed over the summer. We'll also discuss some expectations for her as she heads off to school for the first time. (We'll make it fun by painting some pottery at All Fired Up.)

We'll also spend some time with Ben and Zach individually to talk about their experiences. At some point during the weekend we'll talk about the summer as a family. You and/or your kids may think that these intentional discussions are a little hokey... but don't let that stop you. We are conditioned in our culture to just keep breezing by life looking for what's next. It's worthwhile to look back and remember what we experienced and how it impacted us.

Men, lead your family to review the summer. Talk about experiences, lessons and reactions. Make sure you talk with them about their spiritual development. Did they grow closer to Christ over the summer? This conversation will produce a natural opportunity for you to talk about the future and set the stage for what they'll face as the school year kicks off!

Famtime.com has an awesome family activity to help with this process. It's called Memory Stones. Use it to remind your children that God often instructed his followers to use stones as a way to remember what God did for them.

YOUNG MEN ON A MISSION - Mike & Tim are home!

We're home, recuperating from jet lag, busy with the final days of summer activities and preparing for the Fall! In the coming weeks we will share more details of our exciting father/son mission adventure in South Asia. You'll hear about how we were asked to leave one village after we had all the equipment set up, but hadn't yet started the Jesus film. We'll also tell you about showing the film under the courtyard pavilion on the grounds of a Hindu temple on the following night. Nailing Jello to the Wall

When the children of Israel grew tired of waiting for Moses, they cried out to Aaron for a God, something to believe in... (Exodus 32:1-8) ... He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. They said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." When I read that verse, I have to stop. God had already shown himself powerful to the Children of Israel in so many ways. Yet they turned their worship toward created things rather than the Creator.

One day on our recent mission adventure in South Asia, Tim and I spent a significant amount of time visiting two Hindu temples. In each place we saw gods made by human hands that were revered, respected and worshiped by Hindus. That's strange enough... worshiping created things. But when we sat for an extended time with a Swami at the larger temple and tried to follow his explanation of what they believe... it was all over the place.

The swami used a logo for his temple/mission to explain that their goal is to reach a point where they no longer have any personal desires. They are all about helping others and wanting things only for others. They hope to achieve this through... dedication, meditation, selfless service and wisdom. The conversation went on for a long time... Tim asked... "So when do you know that you've prayed enough?"

Great question! But no great answer.

We received gracious hospitality and had an unforgettable experience but left there knowing that there's no truth in their philosophy.

We finished the time by going into the temple with the Swami to see the gods... a statue of a man. I was amazed that they were worshiping a statue of a man. We then had an opportunity to share a simple gospel presentation with them using the evanga-card.

Pretty crazy- to be standing in a Hindu temple, with a swami, sharing Christ. But here's something even more strange... There are many Americans whose thoughts and understanding about how they plan to get to heaven/eternal bliss is just as flimsy as the swamis! Their faith is without substance and when you try to figure them out and understand what they really believe or compare it to Truth.... it's like nailing Jello to a wall.

The Beard Must Go!

While the beard was a hit with some of the villages in South Asia,

it was NOT with Stacy!

She has also made it clear that the sideburns, mustache and soul patch have to go as well!

2 YOUNG MEN ON MISSION

Tim and I are headed to South Asia on a mission trip this Saturday. We've started a blog called 2 Young Men on Mission to share the story and our experiences. Take a look at our preliminary posts and register to follow our story. We hope to make posts periodically throughout the trip as we have opportunity and access to electricity/internet.

Also... speaking of prayer as God brings us to mind this week, would you pray for us to be effective in the work God has prepared for us. Our primary mission is to share Jesus Christ with folks who make endless sacrifices and offerings to gods made by human hands, having never heard of God the Creator who loves them so much that he was willing to make a sacrifice of his own son on their behalf.

We'll look forward to sharing the experience with you in more detail when we're back in VA. Feel free to post comments about the trip on our blog.

We know that Noble Warriors exists and has Kingdom impact only because God allows it to be so. Please plan to join with us in praying for this work on Friday. A number of folks will be coming to the Noble Warriors Office to pray during the day. We've also set up a 12-hour prayer schedule. We'd love to know that you're praying during a particular time. Strategic Prayer Initiative - Friday July 30th!

We're amazed by God's work in and through this ministry. Much as been accomplished but there is much yet to be done. We recognize that the Sovereign Lord helps us see ministry opportunities and supplies resources necessary to respond. We also believe that God's hand of favor rests on this work. We don't want to lose that. Neither do we want to step outside of His purpose and call for Noble Warriors.

So for 12 hours next Friday, July 30th, from 5 AM to 5 PM we're asking folks to pray for Noble Warriors. We'll publish a prayer guide next week and will have a blog page online for people to share their comments. The Noble Warriors office will be open for prayer throughout the day.

Sitting in a Mud Puddle!

Boys love to play in the mud. I stomped in my fair share of mud puddles as a kid and have churned up some mud in Jeeps & ATVs as an adult. Guys like to get in the mud and slosh it around. Mud is an an obstacle, a challenge, an adventure... fun!

But, I now have another view of mud puddles. At a Weekend to Remember Conference last month, Stacy and I leaned a new concept that is helping us communicate. If you're at all observant around women, you've recognized that sometimes they just need to talk about what's going on in their lives with more descriptive emotion than most of us can handle. And being guys who like to save the day, solve problems and fix things, our natural tendency is to offer suggestions and solutions. Almost without exception, this is a bad idea.

So, what did we learn at the conference? A new concept called "mud-puddling". The speaker, Bill Munz, said that when his wife is in one of those moods, she tells him that she needs for him to just sit in a mud puddle with her for a while. This is a high level code that means "just sit and listen attentively but don't try to fix anything". Most of us guys weren't born with natural skill for just sitting in the mud puddle. Our natural inclination is to churn it up, but we can and must learn to bless our wives by just sitting in the puddle with her.

I will tell you that women are much better at this than most of us, so... there are times (like last week at our house) when it's wise to suggest that your wife go out and "mud-puddle" with some other ladies. If you spend some fun time with the kids and encourage her to meet with her girlfriends for some "mud-puddling", you can be her hero! So guys here's the deal...

Practice the un-natural art of "mud puddling" with your wife.

Recognize those surprise times when she just starts talking and go into "mud puddle mode". Listen attentively but don't offer solutions.
Recognize when you're in over your head and encourage her to go for an intense "mud puddling session" with some girlfriends.

Remember guys, Peter told us to "live with your wife in an understanding way" You may never fully understand but there can be much joy on the journey. Read on...

A PERSONAL "MUD-PUDDLING" STORY

Last week, I knew Stacy needed more "mud-puddling" therapy than I'm capable of. So I encouraged her to go out with friends. She made some calls and set a plan. I knew which restaurant they were going to meet at so I stopped by on the way home and bought a gift certificate for dessert. I wrote a brief note encouraging the ladies to enjoy their time together. I described my wife to the manager and went home to spend a fun evening with the kids.

Well, let's just say that when the manager comes to the table and asks "are you Stacy?", then proceeds to explain that her husband stopped by earlier and paid for dessert, that makes a HUGE impression! Guys, I encourage you to try this! The results are wonderful!!

Be Intentional!

Sir, what are your intentions? Many of us have wishes and desires but I think the idea of intention is much stronger. In several different contexts over the last few weeks, I've heard this directive, "Be Intentional!" and I think it's great advice (as long as you're intentional about the right things). See, there's a big difference between wishing you had a strong marriage and being intentional about investing in the health of your marriage. Just like there's a difference between wishing your child would respond more positively and being intentional about strengthening your relationship with him or her.

Summer is here. Schedules are a little different. Days are longer. Perhaps you have more flexibility or greater opportunity. Let's all endeavor to be intentional about something that we've been lax on lately. Here are some ideas...

Be intentional about meeting with God - Establish prayer and bible reading as a priority for the next 30 days. Get up early and meet with the creator of the universe. Read some scripture and pray. Jesus himself modeled intentionality for us here: "And rising very early in the morning, while it was still hard, he departed and went out to a desolate place , and there he prayed." Mark 1:35

Be intentional about investing in your marriage- Men summer is a great time for simple dates with your bride. I'm amazed by how a small investment in listening to Stacy process her day helps her feel close to me. I must admit that it's hard for me to just listen without making lots of comments and suggestions. But, I'm practicing phrases I learned from other wise men with healthy marriages... phrases like, "Tell me more." "Then what happened?" "How can I help?"

Summer is a great time to 'rejoice in the wife of your youth'. It's also a great time for the complete teaching of Proverbs 5:15-19. Be intentional about looking up and practicing this wisdom from Solomon! By the way... The $.99 Frosty is back at Wendy's. You can enjoy a date-night conversation for just over $2.00!

Be intentional about investing in your children. Summer is an awesome time to do things differently with your kids. Here are some great ideas:

Evening bike rides
Games in the yard
Household projects
Reading a book together
Plan a trip together
Date nights with Dad

Remember Deuteronomy 6:6-9 - Teach them God's truths "when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."

I Love Being a Dad!

One of the greatest adventures in my life is the fact that Timothy, Zachery, Benjamin and Hannah call me Daddy. They bring me great joy! So, what’s so exciting about being a dad?

Well, it comes down to a verse of scripture that motivates and encourages me, here it is, “Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons (and daughters) born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.” Children are a blessing. Now let’s not kid ourselves …they don’t always feel like a blessing. Yet, I delight in the fact that through our four ‘arrows’ my wife Stacy and I can extend our reach far into the future.

According to this passage, I am a warrior. It’s my job to make sure my arrows are straight, sharp and true. An arrow that stays in the quiver is merely an ornament. Arrows are meant to be released they should fly straight, hit their targets and accomplish their mission. So, together with Stacy, I have a great responsibility to fashion arrows that will be released at the appropriate time, fly straight, reach a destination and accomplish a mission. This is where the excitement begins!

As a dad, I want to teach them things. They should know how to explore new places, solve problems, defend a position, make decisions, engage others, be polite, find their way and discern right from wrong. Obviously this list isn’t complete but you get the picture. The big challenge then becomes, how do we teach these things and have fun? Here are just a few of the ideas we’ve employed…

We encourage our kids to try. Within safe but broad boundaries, children need to experiment and see what life feels like. We love to watch our kids try new stunts on the playground, attempt a new sport, learn a new skill or create a new game.

Zachery loves to climb and he loves gadgets. I came home one day to find him and Benjamin trying to climb a tree in a homemade harness that consisted of a pair of old underwear, suspenders, a bicycle inner tube and a rope. It was quite a sight! It’s only through experiments like this that children learn, not every idea is a good one. They solve problems, modify designs, improve performance and find better solutions.

We expect our kids to succeed… and fail. Regardless of what our kids attempt, we want them to do their best. We cheer like crazy whenever we have the chance and talk about lessons learned from success. But we also recognize that some of the most important lessons are learned from losing. So, we cheer for their efforts and help them understand the lessons they learn from coming in second, or last.

Timothy is a miler on his track team. He does very well but, because there’s an exceptional athlete in his grade, the best he’s ever done is second. He’s learned many lessons about courage, determination and confidence by continuing to push, not for a win but for a respectable finish.

We want our children to understand that there are absolute standards of right and wrong. With that in mind, Stacy and I know that sometimes our children will do the wrong thing. Our kids aren’t perfect, neither are we. So, our desire and our prayer is that our children will do the right thing most of the time. We also desire and pray that when they do wrong, they will be caught and severely punished.

Recently, Hannah did something wrong and was punished. Her tender heart was broken when she confessed it to me. It was a blessed moment to hold her while she cried and understood that she had done wrong. I hope she never forgets how bad that feels.

I’m not a perfect dad. I make lots of mistakes. But I do delight in watching our children experiment with life and learn lessons that will serve them well when they are launched out into life. We continue to pray that lessons learned in our home and the cheers they’ve heard along the way will prepare our arrows to fly straight, hit a target and accomplish a mission! I’ll always delight in listening to their stories and cheering for them. That’s what Dads do.

Fathers & Sons, Zack's Courageous Blooper, Opportunities

Fathers & Sons - Challenge Course

On Thursday evening last week, five fathers and seven sons faced their fears and learned about working together in a unique Richmond environment. We were part of a father/son outing at Richmond Ropes. Richmond Ropes is a fully certified ACCT High & Low Ropes Challenge Course. It is located in a beautiful patch of woods in East Richmond.

We had a blast working together to conquer the Low Ropes Obstacle Course then tackled the Giant Swing and the High Multi-vine Obstacle. Stepping off the 20' platform to enjoy the Giant Swing was a thrill! Just like stepping out on faith to follow God. Crossing a cable that's 20' in the air with nothing more than a few ropes to hold you steady was a thrill as well.

A trip to Richmond Ropes would be an exciting summer activity for a group of dads and kids from your church. The events are challenging and fun but "processing" the activities in a group then individually with your kids is a great way to teach spiritual truths!

The "LOOK"! I Saw The Look Yesterday

It's wasn't a look of disgust, frustration or anger. Although I do get those looks from time to time. No, it was a look that warmed my heart and made me feel great. Ben gave me the look when he noticed me at swim practice. He didn't say anything. He didn't run over and give me a hug. He saw me, his facial expression changed to a confident grin, and he went on about his business.

It really wasn't a big deal. No one else probably noticed. No other parents or kids cared that Mike Young was there. But Ben Young did! And he & I shared a moment. Twenty yards apart but a connection at the heart. I was there simply to watch and cheer. From time to time as the practice went on, he would look over to see... is Dad still here? Is Dad still watching? I'm sure there were times when I didn't see him look at me as there were times when he didn't see me watching him. But when our eyes would touch, there was another moment.

Men, we all know the impact of a dad's presence, or lack thereof. I still remember looking up in the stands on Friday nights to see my Dad, wearing my varsity jacket, standing on the top row. His presence make a difference. My presence makes a difference to Tim, Zack, Ben and Hannah. I can't be there for every practice or competition but I want to be there when I can. It feels great to know that just being there so they can see me inspires confidence, courage, and strength.

Sunday is Father's Day. Make sure you celebrate your Dad or another man whose presence in you life quickened your stride, strengthened your resolve and made you stand taller. Also, make sure you are seeking out opportunities to encourage your children or other youngsters - simply with your presence.

One final thought... Men, when we do this well, we help children catch a glimpse of our Heavenly Father. Consider Proverbs 15:3 "The eyes of the Lord are in every place keeping watch on the evil and the good".

How to Ruin Your Life by 40

Men, I love to put excellent resources in your hands! I recently read a book by Steve Farrar - titled How to Ruin Your Life by 40. It's a quick read (139 pages w/lots of white space). But the message is potent!

The book started out as a series of talks that Steve presented at a high school graduation and a conference for college students. So the target is not us 40 (and plus) year old guys but the younger guys... the ones who are just starting to make decision as adults. However, I recommend it for us "mature" guys too! You'll meet yourself and many men you know on every page. Then, you need to use this book to help a younger man, someone you can mentor to steer clear of some ticking time bombs. These are decisions and attitudes that will blow them out of the water before their journey sets sail. Here's a sample of the pitfalls...

If you want to ruin your life by 40:

Ignore the law of cause and effect
Refuse to take responsibility for your choices
Ignore God's directions about marriage
Develop a mind-set that is not teachable
Hide your heart instead of guarding it

Guys, this book will provide some great discussion starters for you and your son (or daughter), or a young protege. It deals with issues that really are critical to abundant living. Purchase a copy. Read it for yourself. Then find a way to share your life experiences and Steve Farrar's wisdom with a young person who's just getting started in life. You could impact many generations by helping one young adult steer clear of satan's traps.

Caught in the Act!

Caught in the Act!

Earlier this week, Zachery (11) and I visited Albany, Georgia where the folks at Sherwood Baptist Church are filming Courageous. This is the next feature film from the team who brought us Flywheel, Facing the Giants & Fireproof. The experience was exciting and eye opening.

How can a church in a small Georgia town produce films that rock the world? Here's how... During a clip review session Alex Kendrick said "we know that God's favor is our greatest asset. We don't want to do anything that would cause God to remove His hand of blessing from this new project. It's all about Him and His love of us through Jesus Christ."

That's it! Everyone involved in the projects are just

regular guys who love the Lord and want to do their best to honor Him. As a matter of fact, Ken Bevel (Michael in Fireproof ) plays a sheriff's deputy in Courageous. But during a break in filming I found him in the Sherwood church nursery with a child on each knee. I snapped a photo and thanked him for living out his faith and commitment as a dad. He said "I'm just trying to get it right". Men, I caught him in the act of being who he is... A godly man who's working hard to be a father who will impact the future by blessing his children.

For those who are curious, Zachery and I were extras in three scenes. There is no telling whether or not we'l

make the cuts and actually be part of the film, but the experience was a blast. Here's a photo of us on the set. Yes, that's Robert Lewis, author of the Men's Fraternity material, with us.

To Bangladesh - A Father/Son Adventure

One of my goals as a dad has been to have an international missions experience with each of my sons as they prepare to enter high school. I wanted the experience to be a life-marker; an opportunity to spend time with each of them individually in an environment that's completely foreign. Stretching our faith and living expectantly... (As if starting Noble Warriors wasn't enough of a faith stretch!)

Tim is fourteen and will be headed off to high school in September. Our summer schedule is already pretty crazy so I wasn't sure if something would work out for us, but just recently we made a commitment to join two other men on a trip to Bangladesh. Admittedly, I don't have a strong sense of calling to the Bangla people or even to that part of the world. (Bangladesh is just east of India.) My calling is to a God-sized faith adventure with my sons... And Timothy's up first.

Our mission isn't completely clear yet. We'll be working with a resident missionary to the Hindu people of Bangladesh. We do know that we'll have an opportunity to experience life and culture in an area of the world where Christianity is very much a minor religion. We'll experience incredible population density, extreme poverty and many other culture shocks.

Stacy and I continue to pray expectantly for the impact this adventure will have on Timothy... but I have to tell you that I've been surprised by the impact that the preparation process is having on me. I'm experiencing a growing excitement about this 'frontier' mission experience. I'm also amazed by the thoughts about my own life and faith that have been generated.

I'll share more about our preparation and the trip in the coming weeks. In the meantime, would you please pray that God would go before us, preparing the way for our journey and that He would work in us, preparing us for the experience?

One final thought... men I believe this will have a huge impact on both Tim and me as individuals and our father/son relationship. As this story unfolds, I hope you'll begin to consider what it might look like for you to participate in an international missions experience with your children.

Courageous - Honor Begins at Home

Many of you were deeply impacted by the movie Fireproof and are anxious for the next film from the Sherwood Pictures Team, Courageous. Out in Theaters in early 2011, Courageous is a film about four law enforcement officers who wrestle with challenges of a demanding profession and the even bigger challenge of fathering.

Courageous is currently being filmed in Albany, Georgia. I'm looking forward to being there next Monday and Tuesday to see some of the filming and experience the making of what many are praying will be another "God Movie".

Noble Warriors has a personal connection with Stephen Kendrick, who is the producer for Sherwood Pictures. Stephen spoke at our Colonial Heights Iron Sharpens Iron Conference in 2009. Many men were moved by his personal testimony about his own father's impact and the role that prayer played in the making of Flywheel, Facing the Giants, and Fireproof.

Update: Building Men's Ministry in the Local Church

God is at work among us! This spring Noble Warriors hosted three Reaching Every Man training events. Forty-seven men representing twenty-seven churches were equipped and encouraged to develop an all-inclusive ministry to men in their churches.

Last month, thirty-eight men from twent-three churches received specific training on how to use Men's Fraternity as part of their church's men's ministry process. We're excited to be able to multiply the impact of Noble Warriors by strengthening the local church!
